Daylight Savings Time Starts Sunday, March 10, 2019, 2:00 am; East and West Coast, Central, Mountain. More info.

All about and dealing with the Daylight Savings Time (DST) changes in the US and around the world, plus some resource links. Technically, it's actually called " Daylight Saving Time ", without the "s". But we all seem determined to add that extra letter and we all seem fine with it. This page briefly covers:
  • The what and why of daylight savings time and some timezone notes
  • The current US schedule for when daylight savings time begins and ends
  • Where is daylight savings time in the US and some timezone notes
  • Dealing with changing all the clocks
  • Daylight savings time around the world

Why Have and What Is Daylight Savings Time?

This page is US-centric; but except for the start and end dates, it's pretty much all the same.

The purpose of Daylight Savings Time is to conserve energy. There is some dispute as to whether this objective is accomplished or not. The methodology used is to move one hour of sunlight from the morning to the evening by resetting the clocks.

The official abbreviation for Daylight Savings Time is DST (Standard Time being ST). So, for the east and west coast time zones for example, the designations change from EST and PST to EDT and PDT.

When Does Daylight Savings Time Start and End in 2019?

Daylight Saving Time Begins: Sunday, March 10, 2019, 2:00 am (dates updated yearly)

To move one hour of sunlight from the morning to the evening, clocks are reset ahead one hour every spring. Currently this is done on the second Sunday of every March at 2:00 a.m. At the appointed time, the clocks are reset forward to 3:00 a.m. ("spring forward").

Daylight Saving Time Ends: Sunday, November 3, 2019, 2:00 am (dates updated yearly)

To make things as they were and move that extra sunlight hour back to the morning, clocks are reset back one hour every fall. Currently this is done the first Sunday of every November at 2:00 a.m. At the appointed time, the clocks are reset from 2:00 a.m. back to 1:00 a.m. ("fall back"). Generally, folks aren't amused when this happens; they have become used to not having to commute home in the dark every evening.

Where Is Daylight Savings Time? East and West Coast. More.

Not all of the US engages in this adventure. Both Hawaii and most of Arizona decided they wanted nothing to do with it. Most US territories also do not observe Daylight Savings Time. These entities remain on Standard Time year-round.

The Clock-Changing Reality...

Be glad you don't have to mess with this one...
Yb (Ytterbium) Lattice Atomic Clock (NIST)

What one is "supposed" to do is reset all the clocks and watches before going to bed. However, more often than not, this usually does not happen. The clocks, watches, etc. generally get reset Sunday throughout the day, usually because there are so many of them. Personally, I start doing the resetting beginning mid Saturday morning. By the time I go to bed, I've pretty much already adjusted to the time change.

The various computer and computer-related clocks are invariably checked to see if they were indeed coordinated enough to do what they are supposed to do.

If you are looking to reset everything accurately right down to the precise second, you can do so at www.time.gov. Daylight Savings Time changes are also supposed to be the bi-annual reminder to check and/or change your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors and batteries.

Daylight Saving Time Around the World

DST World Overview List

  • Canada is as the US; most provinces and territories take it, some leave it. Mexico is the same.
  • Central and South America mostly want nothing to do with Daylight Savings Time; however, Chile and parts of Brazil do indeed do DST.
  • Europe mostly does do Daylight Savings Time. Russia, China, and all of Asia want absolutely nothing to do with it.
  • Australia is as the US, Canada and Mexico; majority do, but some don't.
  • Africa is 90% don't do DST and 10% do do DST.
Looks like our species can't even agree on what time it is. But that's OK, we somehow still manage to keep muddling along. In all seriousness, geography and cultural differences do sometimes necessitate adjustments.

Non US daylight savings time start and end dates can usually be found at www.timeanddate.com.

World Time Zone Non Standard Abbreviations

There sure are a lot of them... Not only that, many of the abbreviations are not unique. The whole thing is a complete, non-standardized mess. The reason is each country makes up their own, locally relevant designations. The timeanddate website appears to have the best compilation of the non-standardized world time zone abbreviations currently being used.

There is also a World Standardized Time Zone and and a World Standardized Time Code

  • GMT (0/-/+) is the time zone abbreviation for Greenwich  Mean Time. Many other time zones will refer to themselves as GMT, plus or minus the number of hours difference between their timezone and the GMT timezone.
  • UTC (0/-/+) is the time code abbreviation for Coordinated Universal Time or Universal Coordinated Time. This is the military and civilian standard mostly used these days.
Neither GMT nor UTC observes DST; instead the -/+ offsets are adjusted at the local level. In other words, as Daylight Saving Time comes and goes, the GMT/UTC offsets change. As an example, for the US East Coast, the UTC offset changes from -5 to -4 during DST. For the US West Coast, the UTC offset changes from -8 to -7 during DST.

UTC / GMT Map

"-" means it's an hour earlier. **   "+" means it's an hour later.
Note that each timezone also has its own letter designation.

A Nextdoor Negative Review

This is a regretfully negative review of the Nextdoor website for years 2017, 2018, 2019. Unfortunately, the plethora of inquires from people on the search engines wanting to know how to close, delete, cancel their accounts pretty much substantiates the conclusions drawn by this review.

Be sure to read items #3 and #4 at the end of this review.

"Frankly, I've never seen so many hate-filled trolls
and worse in one place at one time."

I recently discovered a social network website known as Nextdoor. Despite the above quote, every neighborhood Nextdoor forum could be different, so your results or experiences there could vary. There's just no way of knowing in advance.

Posts to the site are made by you and your neighbors in the surrounding areas, sometimes even the police and fire departments will contribute generalized information. The nextdoor website is supposed to help people know what is going on in their neighborhood, but fails miserably in that regard. Unfortunately there is also the possibility of immediately being subjected to unwanted contact.

Nextdoor has all sorts of customization settings available. You can control which nearby neighborhood posts you see. You can control which neighborhood posts you receive email notifications about; settings range from all, some, or none.

The Nextdoor forums are supposed to be a good social network experience. However, attempting to participate can often result in very bad experiences. It is unfortunate this review has been forced to become a negative description of the Nextdoor website.

the Nextdoor Forums Have One Very Bad Flaw.

Bullies, trolls, and worse are not monitored nor restrained in the Nextdoor forums. They are free to launch personal attacks, make false accusations, and even try to do you real harm in the real world. Remember, these are your neighbors and real names and addresses are used. In most cases, they just want to humiliate and inflict as much emotional pain as possible for sport. However, the potential for real world spillover is also a major concern.

It all depends on what forum you happen to be forced to visit or use.

If you happen to live in a neighborhood where bad people haven't yet taken over the Nextdoor forum, things could be ok.

But if you discover it's one of the forums where there are a group of people who automatically want to hurt strangers in any and every way they possibly can just for the fun of it, it is best to depart before there are real world ramifications.

(The gun in the Clint meme is misleading. Extreme emotional pain, false accusations affecting real world situations, vandalism, or legal consequences are the actual, main dangers.)

Here's hoping your neighborhood and corollary Nextdoor forums are one of the normal ones. Take care.

Updates

Item #1 In the event you are subjected to personal attacks and you attempt to defend yourself, you will be the one Nextdoor will ban. Nextdoor lets the lowest common denominator rule, reason being there are so many of them and Nextdoor really doesn't have much of a business choice in the matter. The banning might also be for your own protection, objective being to prevent escalation to the level of real world consequences. There are indeed people inhabiting some of the Nextdoor forums who will do or try to do you real world harm.

Item #2 Based on what I have personally witnessed and what the search engine results say, I wouldn't go there. Nothing of value is ever posted there anyway. And the possibility of negative consequences are just too great.

Item #3 Long story short, better to type your city or neighborhood name into Facebook search. You will invariably find a group dedicated to talking about your neighborhood. There will be regular posts about what crimes have just occurred, both positive and negative comments about experiences at local businesses, what the police and fire departments are currently dealing with, reports of what's going on at specific locations, what's happening at city hall and other government offices, locations to avoid, locations to visit, lots of videos and pictures, and all sorts of other useful information. If you happen to not find a Facebook group for your town, start one and be the admin!

Item #4 I found none of what I described in item #3 at the Nextdoor website. Sadly, the site is useless and can even be dangerous. The intentions of the site owner(s) were no doubt just to duplicate the Facebook groups and provide similar positive experiences. I respect them for trying. It is just plain bad luck the forums were taken over by undesirables.

What Is Metaphysics and the Metaphysical – Science / Philosophy / Spiritual - Examples

The definition and meaning of metaphysics and the metaphysical.

And some examples.

The Undefined Science

Metaphysics – not even Stanford and Wikipedia can agree on neither a succinct nor an encompassing meaning or definition for metaphysics. This is because:
  • The definitions and meanings of metaphysics and metaphysical keep changing.
  • The study and science of metaphysics includes an almost unlimited number of subcategories.
  • The most respected minds in academia, the sciences, and even in the general population are continually unable to reach an agreement as to the perfect meaning or definition.
  • There are disputes as to what does and does not belong in the study or category of metaphysics and metaphysical.

One definition or meaning for metaphysics could be the sciences and non-sciences that cannot be put in another category are put into the category of metaphysics. However, this meaning or definition would not be complete; because there are sciences that are studied and categorized in other categories that are also included as a part of metaphysics and the metaphysical.

For certain disciplines, the discipline is a subset of metaphysics; and metaphysics is a subset of the discipline. In other words, each is a subset of the other depending on the context and/or the parameters used.

An example:
A. There is the philosophical part of metaphysics.
B. There is the metaphysical part of philosophy.

What is Metaphysics and the Metaphysical - Thinking Outside the Box

Problems can have more than one solution.

Subjects such as cosmology, ontology, physics, philosophy, existence, time and space, astrobiology, perception, etc are generally undisputed as being both part of metaphysics and outside of metaphysics. It all depends on the subcategory of the main subject being addressed.

Other examples and subjects continually being associated with metaphysics include paranormal, astrology, New Age, spiritual, meditation, wisdom, karma, determinism, fate, shaman, unity, reiki, psychic, mind and matter, meaning of life, feng shui, etc.; the metaphysical and quasi-metaphysical list can be a long one.

Metaphysics is the perfect place to “think outside the box”. You are allowed to research any theory or hypothesis you wish. You are allowed to follow any chain of logic to wherever it goes. Mixing “unrelated” subjects to derive unusual metaphysical “solutions” is perfectly acceptable. In other words, you are allowed to explore without constraint.

Philosophy vs Metaphysics - Perception, perspective, and reality.

And some examples.

What Is Spiritual Metaphysics

Spiritual metaphysics versus religion

What is spiritual metaphysics? It is similar, but not the same as religion.

What is religion? Religion is where one makes up whatever they want.

Spiritual metaphysics on the other hand, attempts to base its conclusions on logic. As humankind's logic and thinking abilities evolve, so does spiritual metaphysics.

Metaphysical and Philosophical Thoughts, Quotes, Ramblings, Examples... And possibly a little scattered humor.

In the beginning there was nothing, which exploded.

With all that goes on in life and reality, the only possible conclusion is we are all lab rats.

Most everything means nothing.

Time can sometimes cure a problem all by itself. Though can be an excellent excuse for procrastination, it is more often than not not a wise choice.

Free will exists. But it is limited. And it is limited more with some than with others.

Sometimes one can actually choose whether a problem exists or not.

Belief is the death of intelligence.

The fatal flaw of logic is its presumption of being aware of all relevant premises. However, that is seldom the true situation. The best one can hope for is a favorable probability.

No one belongs here more than you.

No one belongs here less than you.

One of the most important lessons a person can learn in life is that other people are as real behind their eyes as you are behind yours.

Miscommunication can cause more problems than all other factors combined. Always examine a perceived negative statement twice; it may not be negative at all. Give others the benefit of the doubt.

Life is an iterative process.

How to Deal With a Bad, Toxic, Incompetent, Unethical Boss

How to work for a boss you don't respect or is incompetent or has a toxic personality or consistently acts in bad faith? You can’t. It is as simple as that.

You won’t be able to hide your feelings indefinitely. The boss will know exactly what you think of him or her. And you will feel unlimited stress and emotional pain day in and day out.

You Need to Give Yourself Hope.
(And find a new job in the process.)

So what to do? The obvious. Write up those tailor-made resumes and fire them off to every potential employer you can find. You only have to do it once a week. And the time you do it is every Sunday afternoon (assuming you work M-F, otherwise adjust schedule accordingly). Then check your voicemail every noon and night. And check your email every evening. What the heck, maybe fire off another resume or two while you're at it. And the proverbial advice to network is true; let everyone you know outside of work that you are looking.

Did I say you can’t work for a boss you despise? Actually, you can by just doing as described above.

How? That is simple, too.

Now during the workweek, whenever your boss does something particularly stupid, unethical, or otherwise disgusting; you can switch your thoughts to thinking about all the potential employers you sent your resumes to last Sunday. In other words, you have now given yourself hope and positive thoughts to draw on.

And sooner or later, an interview invite will come. And sooner or later, a job offer will come.

And you will be out of there.

Here is a list of Free Job Search Engines.

You are not alone.

List of MILF Dating Etiquette Rules and Tips

MILF Dating Tips and Etiquette

First and foremost, one must be sure the MILF is not still married. Still married MILFs can result in extreme husband irritation as to your poaching. You are going to have enough problems as to the kid(s), you don't need an angry husband on top of that.

As to the kid(s), 20% to 50% of the time, you will be stood up. This percentage will vary depending on the number and ages of the kids the MILF is dealing with.

If one has successfully navigated beyond the above two issues, then the list of following rules apply.

  • Respect that you are interacting with another human being.
  • Be understanding when kid problems supersede dates.
  • Never bring up the kids. This will inevitably result in a MILF soliloquy about kids. Even worse, statements about the Ex will ensue.
  • Do not attempt to be the MILFs kids' substitute dad. The kids will immediately hate you. Let the relationship develop naturally over time. Let the kids and the MILF set the pace.
  • MILFs know how to cook, avail yourself of this at every opportunity.
  • Have you become thoroughly tangled up with the MILF over time? Well then, might as well go ahead and do the drop off and pick up the kid(s) and other errands.
  • Are you now doing her home repairs? Looks like you are doomed, time to marry her.

Lists of Somewhat Humorous Reminders as to Things One Should Not Do or Say on MILF First Dates

List of Things One Should Not Do

  • Chew gum (or anything else).
  • >Wipe your nose with your shirt sleeve.
  • Brag about the people skills you learned while serving time for assault and battery.
  • Mention the time you were caught under your boss's desk.

List of Things One Should Not Say

  • You gotta cigarette?
  • You got some Alka-Seltzer? his hangover is killing me.
  • I haven't stalked anybody in months.
  • ...lawsuit...
  • Still waiting for my STD test results.
  • What are your favorite positions?
  • I love you.
  • ...restraining order...
  • ...ankle bracelet...
  • Nice dress! I have one just like it
  • My wife wanted me to ask if you like threesomes.

To End on a Serious Note...

You are interacting with an adult who has had considerable experiences in life, some of which have been extremely good and some of which have been extremely bad. As the quote at the bottom of every page on this website says, "One of the most important lessons a person can learn in life is other people are as real behind their eyes as you are behind yours." — Author unknown

Beware Consumer and Medical Contracts - Just Say No

Beware Patients and Consumer Contract Fraud - Contracts and the Law and You and the Judge - A short, cautionary note. Unethical contracts are the ultimate definition of SWAG (Stolen Without a Gun).

"But, your honor!?!" I said to the judge...

Judge, “You signed a contract.”

Me, “You mean that paragraph at the bottom of the application form?”

Judge, “Yes.”

Me, “But every bank in the country has that clause.”

Judge, “What clause?”

Me, “The sentence that says I’ve read and agreed to their charter; that I’ve read and agreed to all their bylaws; that I’ve read and agreed to all their rules and regulations. All of that stuff would be a stack of paper from the floor to the ceiling; and they wouldn’t even have copies at the branch for me to read anyway.”

Judge, “I know. But anything you sign is a contract.” (Side note: he is right.)

Me, “But every financial institution in the country has that clause.”

Judge, “I know.”

Me, “But if we don’t sign, we can’t get a checking account, savings account, credit card account or loan anywhere!”

Judge, “Sucks, doesn’t it?”

Me, “What do I owe?”

Judge, “Well, let’s see what they made up... Yep, that’s what you owe.”

The above story is fictional, but versions of it happen for real thousands of times every month. That is why I never do business with national banks or credit card companies. Finding a local credit union is the only way to go; they have versions of the same clause, but most of them are not thieves (see referenced article).

Needless to say, unethical consumer contracts don't just apply to national banks. In fact, there are credit card companies out there that are 10 times worse than any bank. Cable companies are another example, which is one reason why customers are leaving them in droves. Some cellphone carriers are also less than scrupulous, their contracts sometime include a clause stating you have to pay them even when they don't provide the agreed upon services. And then there is the worst of the worst, otherwise known as private sector contracts having to do with anything medical.

A Rant and Warning and Consumer Alert about Contracts

You have no civil rights when you blindly give them away by signing a multi-page, fine print contract without reading it. This happens all the time. The days of trusting an entity just because they are a large corporation or an established business are long gone. This is especially applicable as to credit card companies, medical entities, financial institutions, auto repair entities, and pretty much any and all other service-related entities. Corporate greed is the rule, not the exception.

Read the contract. If it’s too long for you to read and understand at the time, don’t sign it. If any of the print is too small for you to read, don’t sign it. If there is anything in it you don’t like or understand, don’t sign it. If it's incomplete, don't sign it. If you don't know what you are doing, don't sign it.

By definition anything you sign is a contract; whether it be just a single word, phrase, sentence, paragraph, or a hundred page document. Whenever someone tries to get you to sign something, it is for their benefit, not yours.

Reading a contract will give you an education; not reading a contract will give you an “adventure”.

Unethical contracts and incompetent/unethical civil laws victimize more people than all legally defined criminal activity combined. It is the ultimate definition of SWAG (Stolen without a Gun).

Beware contracts.

About Class Action Lawsuits...

A class action lawsuit can result when a significant number of consumers have been victimized. Sometimes the company made an honest mistake, a defective product for example. Many times, however, class action lawsuits can result from SWAG consumer contracts or other behavior so egregious that it can't be covered up anymore. Personally, I think some of these cases should be in criminal court as opposed to civil court. If you happen to notice a class action lawsuit you are eligible to join as a member, you might as well sign up for it. You may not get much in the way of compensation, but at least you will get something.

Legal note: I am not an attorney, but one does not have to be a thief to recognize a theft.

Side note: The thief/theft reference is in regards to contracts, not attorneys. Any attorney or legal firm who specializes in protecting/helping consumers and patients are welcome to post links to their websites in the comments section below.

Corporate Employers Refusing and Not Hiring the Unemployed

Updated for Year 2018

Many national companies refuse to hire the unemployed. Their company hiring process is to only hire people who are already working at another company. A corporate greed fact and the way it is. What can an unemployed person do about it? Try applying at the smaller and/or local companies.

[Side Note. If you happen to be looking for a job, here are a boatload of job resources. And never, ever pay for a job lead or job interview. The industry standard is the potential employer pays the recruiter; the applicant is not required to pay anything. Ever. And if you happen to come across any work-at-home offers and up-front money is requested; depart that website immediately.]

Companies Are Excluding the Jobless from Hiring.
Corporate Greed in America.

Corporate Greed in America, Jobs, Employment Ads, Hiring Practices.

Corporate America continues its refusal to hire the unemployed. Their job ads now contain phrases such as “no unemployed candidates will be considered” or “must be currently employed”. This is truly corporate greed at its worst.
This problem has become increasingly severe as evidenced by EEOC Testimony.

This page is an ongoing compilation of companies engaging in this particular corporate-greed practice. If the reader is aware of such a company, please post their name and/or ad excerp in the Comments Section below; any additional information would also be appreciated..

EEOC Testimony Excerpts

Eliminating arbitrary employment barriers that operate to weed out qualified and interested job applicants…

It is profoundly disturbing the trend of deliberately excluding the jobless from work opportunities is on the rise…

"Unemployed Need Not Apply", stories suggesting systematic exclusion, often blatant, of unemployed workers from consideration for jobs began to emerge early last summer

Sony Ericsson,…had posted a job announcement…explicitly stating, “No Unemployed Candidates Will Be Considered At All". Ad posted on The People Place specified the company would “not consider/review anyone NOT currently employed regardless of the reason".

A Craigslist posting for assistant restaurant managers … flatly requiring applicants, “Must be currently employed"…

Unemployed workers, mostly older workers, told they will not be referred or considered for employment, once recruiters or potential employers learn they are not currently working.

Most executive recruiters won’t look at a candidate unless they have a job, even if they don’t like to admit it. …

The tendency to exclude the unemployed is growing. …

Other staffing firm industry specialists similarly confirm the unemployed need not apply….: there is a disturbing and growing trend among employers—honored by staffing firms—to refuse to consider the unemployed for available job openings, regardless of their qualifications. This refusal is often explicitly manifested in job ads which include restrictive language specifying only currently employed candidates will be considered; or no unemployed candidates will be considered, regardless of the reason for unemployment.

You Are (Not) Hired.

  • Someone wants to talk politics or religion with you today? Best to avoid that.
  • An email attachment from a stranger? Best not to click that.
  • Computer doing anything weird? Virus/malware scanning time.
  • Feeling overly optimistic? Feeling overly pessimistic? Either way, extra thought prior to action is not a bad idea.

Have a safe, happy, and prosperous Friday the 13th.

And then there is to that thing called entropy, here are the top 10 ways entropy messes with us. It is not pretty, but it's the way it is; at least it is presented in a somewhat humorous light. Well worth the read; puts things in perspective.

Divorce: Reasons and Causes - Preventing and Averting

What Are the Causes of Divorce and How to Prevent It

A serious list of reasons that cause many couples to divorce and what one can sometimes do to avert a divorce. Mainly it is simply self-awareness, early detection, and communication are all that is needed.

Reasons People Divorce

List of Reasons Couples Say Cause Divorce

In some cases, solutions are possible.
  • Infidelity
  • One party too involved in their career or working too much. Emotional neglect.
  • Different views on religion or politics. At the beginning of a marriage, both parties don’t think it’s a big deal. But over time, the disagreements become cumulative and can move to the forefront.
  • Failure to communicate. One person or the other fails to tell the other of a concern that is on their mind. Instead they just let the “issue” build up. In time, the emotion becomes out of proportion to the actual concern.
  • Failure to communicate. A misunderstanding develops that neither party realizes until it is too late.
  • Lack of trust developing over time. Caused by the other items listed here.
  • Money. Lack of money induces a never ending stress. Over time, blame issues may develop.
  • Marrying someone who has habits you don’t like in the belief that you can change them.
  • Failure to be open and honest. Though this includes lying, it also includes failure to volunteer important information.
  • An unwillingness to compromise.
  • Marriages that begin for reasons other than love.

Early Recognition of Problems and Averting Conflict

This admittedly incomplete list was posted in the hopes it might help people. The simple awareness and communication about potential problems is sometimes all that is needed.
  • The mutual awareness that external factors can cause stress.
  • The mutual awareness of lack of communication.
  • The mutual awareness of unintentional neglect.
The key word is "mutual".  These things and more can be overcome; if when something is first noticed, attention is immediately brought to it. Then it can be addressed and dealt with long before the stage where emotions override thought.

I Am Bored. What Should I Do? List of Things to Do When Bored.
