The Nextdoor Website Is Not Safe, Useful, nor Pleasant. A Negative Review.

Latest update: October 13, 2024
Page URL indicates original publication date; meanwhile, times change and the updates continue.

A regretfully negative review of the Nextdoor website for years 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020. 2021, 2022, 2023, 2024. Unfortunately, the plethora of inquiries from people on the search engines wanting to know how to close, delete, cancel their Nextdoor accounts pretty much substantiates the conclusions drawn by this review; not to mention all the BBB complaints. I've also noticed there are search engine queries for:
  • Is Nextdoor Toxic?
  • Nextdoor Horror Stories.

"Frankly, I've never seen so many hate-filled trolls
and worse in one place at one time."

I discovered a social network website known as Nextdoor. Despite the above quote, every neighborhood Nextdoor forum could be different, so your results or experiences there could vary. There's just no way of knowing in advance.

Posts to the site are made by you and your neighbors in the surrounding areas, sometimes even the police and fire departments will contribute generalized information. The Nextdoor website is supposed to help people know what is going on in their neighborhood but fails miserably in that regard. Unfortunately, there is also the possibility of immediately being subjected to unwanted contact and worse.

Nextdoor has all sorts of customization settings available. You can control which nearby neighborhood posts you see. You can control which neighborhood posts you receive email notifications about; settings range from all, some, or none.

The Nextdoor forums are supposed to be a good social network experience. However, attempting to participate can often result in very bad experiences. It is unfortunate this review has been forced to become a negative description of the Nextdoor website and to conclude the site is outright unsafe.

The Nextdoor Forums Have One Very Bad Flaw

Bullies, trolls, and worse are apparently not monitored nor restrained in the Nextdoor forums. They are free to launch personal attacks, make false accusations, and even try to do you real harm in the real world. Remember, these are your neighbors and real names and addresses are used. In most cases, they just want to humiliate and inflict as much emotional pain as possible for sport. However, the potential for real world spillover is also a major concern.

It all depends on what forum you happen to be forced to visit or use.

If you happen to live in a neighborhood where bad people haven't yet taken over the Nextdoor forum, things could be ok.

But if you discover it's one of the forums where there are groups of people who automatically want to hurt strangers in any and every way they possibly can just for the fun of it, it is best to depart before there are real world ramifications.

(The gun in the Clint meme is misleading. Extreme emotional distress, false accusations affecting real world situations, vandalism, or legal consequences are the actual, main dangers.)

If you choose to go near there, here's hoping your neighborhood and corollary Nextdoor forums are one of the normal ones. Take care.

Years 2017, 2018, 2019 Updates (6 entries). Year 2020, 2021, 2022, 2023, 2024 updates follow.

Item #1 In the event you are subjected to personal attacks and you attempt to defend yourself, you will be the one Nextdoor will ban. Nextdoor lets the lowest common denominator rule, reason being there are so many of them and Nextdoor really doesn't have much of a business choice in the matter. The banning might also be for your own protection, objective being to prevent escalation to the level of real world consequences. There are indeed people inhabiting some of the Nextdoor forums who will do or try to do you real world harm.

Item #2 Based on what I have personally witnessed and what the search engine results say, I wouldn't go there. Nothing of value is ever posted there anyway. And the possibility of negative consequences are just too great.

Item #3 Long story short, better to type your city or neighborhood name into Facebook search. You will invariably find a group dedicated to talking about your neighborhood. There will be regular posts about what crimes have just occurred, both positive and negative comments about experiences at local businesses, what the police and fire departments are currently dealing with, reports of what's going on at specific locations, what's happening at city hall and other government offices, locations to avoid, locations to visit, lots of videos and pictures, and all sorts of other useful information. If you happen to not find a Facebook group for your town, you can start one and be the admin.

Item #4 I found very little of what I described in item #3 at the Nextdoor website. Sadly, the site is useless and can even be dangerous. The intentions of the site owner(s) were no doubt just to duplicate the Facebook groups and provide similar positive experiences. I respect them for trying. It is just plain bad luck the Nextdoor forums were taken over by undesirables.

June 2019 Update

The BBB (Better Business Bureau) now has 184 complaints against the Nextdoor "social" website. Yep, definitely best to stay away. I'm no avid fan of Facebook, but Facebook is definitely the better option.

October 2019 Update

I kind of feel sorry for the Nextdoor.com, good faith, website owners. Theirs was a good business idea, only to be destroyed by trolls and others who wish to hurt people. The BBB complaints are now at 235. A lot of time, money, and labor went into the creation and building of that site. I would imagine maintaining the site is no picnic either. Time will tell.

Year 2020, 2021, 2022, 2023, 2024 Updates

January and February 2020 Update

The BBB complaint count was 269 in January; the February count when I checked is at 287. The complaints generally continue to reflect the opinions stated in this review and accompanying comments. As previously mentioned, the Facebook Groups are your better bet. If a Facebook Group goes bad, one can simply select another (Facebook usually has more than one group per town); with Nextdoor.com, that option isn't available.

April 2020 Update

Well, I dropped by the BBB website. The complaint count was 312 when I looked. Nextdoor is now demanding that people send them copies of their drivers license. It also now appears that whatever one's right to privacy one has had has now gone up in flames. Also, accounts appear to be being deleted for no reason. Even if there weren't the rampant troll problems, the site just doesn't seem to be worth the bother. As mentioned before, one can just go to one of the city groups on Facebook for the same benefits and without all the aggravation. My speculation is that Nextdoor.com is trying to get rid of all the trolls. Unfortunately, there are too many of them and innocent people are becoming victims in the collateral damage crossfire.

July 2020 Update

The complaint count for Nextdoor.com is now at 360: BBB website. They still require that one verifies their home address with either their drivers license or other personal information (rent bill, passport, financial statement from bank, utility bill, mobile phone address match, etc.). Search engine results continue to show postings about privacy invasion and about Nextdoor.com selling your personal information to advertisers (I seriously suspect this also includes telephone solicitors); the Better Business Bureau is now posting a warning: "...BBB recommends consumers review the company’s guidelines & policies section prior to using NextDoor.com services.".

January 2021 Update

The complaint counts for Nextdoor.com now stands at 450: BBB website. In addition to everything else, these days posting any sort of political comment on Nextdoor.com is not a good idea.

April 2021 Update

Apparently due to the high volume, the BBB is no longer posting all the complaints about Nextdoor.com. The BBB says in part, "...or BBB may display a portion of complaints when a high volume is received for a particular business."

June 2021 Update

The comments following this review do not bode well for Nextdoor.

October 2021 Update

The BBB complaints now stand at 527.

October 2021 Update According to the news, Facebook is also having problems. And so it goes...  It is not just Nextdoor that is a mess. It is society that is a mess.

January 2022 Update
Nothing really new to report. Meta (Facebook) is famous for misinformation. Nextdoor is famous for trolls.

April 2022 Update
Here is an interesting newspaper/website article about Nextdoor: Is media platform Nextdoor a friend in need or a vigilante nightmare?

August 2022 Update
I found this to be rather amusing... There are all sorts of nextdoor domain names for sale, including nextdoor.net, nextdoor.info, and dozens more. Here is the List at Sedo.com.

September 2022 Update
Meta aka Facebook is shutting down their neighborhoods project. As far as I know, it was basically a clone of the nextdoor.com website. Meta decided that it's existing Facebook neighborhood groups is the way to go. In other words: if it's not broke, don't fix it. The page is at engadget.

January 2023 Update
If the comments here and on the BBB website are any indication, Nextdoor does not seem to have any sort of functioning system in place to vet or supervise those who are responsible for moderating the neighborhoods.

April 2023 Update
Nextdoor upper management could learn a lot about their site by reading the visitor comments here.

May 2023 Update
I'm actually beginning to feel some sympathy for Nextdoor. It's not that Nextdoor wants to be toxic. It's the plethora of users there that are toxic and ND's insufficient financial situation to solve the moderator problem. I guess it is just the nature of our species. People's truer personalities come to the fore when they can hide behind a keyboard and screen. What brought on this update was an article from Engadget: Nextdoor is using a generative AI to encourage users to ‘rephrase’ mean posts.

June 2023 Update
The comments here continue. It's ok to mention specific neighborhoods, but naming people's names is not a good idea.

February 2024 Update
Mainstream media, both national and local neighborhood newspapers, are now frequently reporting about the toxicity of Nextdoor. And they are not reporting it as their opinion, but as a fact. It appears that Nextdoor has become much worse than when this WebsiteWithNoName review was originally written.

April 2024 Update
If your particular Nextdoor neighborhood has basically degenerated into a high-schooler mentality due to immature neighbors and bad faith moderators, it's time to walk away. It is not going to change. Meta/Facebook and many other alternatives are available.

June 2024 Update
Well, I see that the circus continues. Here is an opinion piece from the Washington Post: Nextdoor has gotten way out of hand.

October 2024 Update
Our species continues to be a mess. The BBB complaints are worse than ever.

  1. I am a Nextdoor Lead and spend more time that I probably should on this site considering the pay. One of my jobs is to moderate, so your statement that bullies, troll, or worse are not monitored or restrained is simply untrue.

    1. That is not correct. A few days ago I was trolled and the troll also stated that many have my phone number on the site

    2. Completely incorrect. The trolls are on every location and the leads are a joke. ND suppresses small business while giving access to multiple "Spam" national ads and some have PUPS, a software that contains adware, installs toolbars or has other unclear objectives. The site is run and monitored by bullies.

      Delete
    3. The Leads are sometimes the trolls themselves and the bullies. One in particular doesn't follow the guidelines and publicly shames people, lies publicly, and you can not prove him wrong publicly or you are banned or blocked or whatever they call it. It is shameful.

      Delete
    4. Then you are part of the problem. Nextdoor allows bullies while punishing those that stand up against those bullies.

    5. banned 4 days for questioning man that was promoting noisy drag races.

    6. I have a home in New Orleans and I have a home in Northern CA. Nextdoor would not allow me to have 2 accounts even though I sent them (against my principles) a utility bill, driver's license, rental information, owner of home information. What is this? "Show me your papers" said the Nazi! Nextdoor is run by NAZI's. You must say what they want or else you're suspended or disabled. Fuck you Nextdoor!

    7. It’s a cesspool of miserable angry people. A lead in my group actually promoted and posted the blatant lie that I was a sexual predator. They posted my name and address. It is a worthless app and website. Pure trash.

    8. Next Door Leads are little power hungry community members for the most part. Nextdoor is full of whiny little brats that ask for "advice" and then complain when people call them out. It is a horrible, weird place to settle with some of the worst, entitled people out there. Stay away at all costs. Like the article mentioned, use a community based group in FB or your neighborhood police blotter if you are worried about crime etc. Otherwise NextDoor is a time waster with petty people complaining about First World problems under the protection of the "Leads". It is, as everyone says, a stupid, horrible app. In fact, the "leads" are usually the worst bullies.

    9. Robin L. Is a lead and she sent me a private message because I was taking up for my beliefs on her site basically cussed me out for saying I was going to turn her in and if she got me kicked off for not being the bully then I told her I would sue. Free speech blah blah. She doesn't even live in my county how can they run my neighborhood watch website whatever you wanna call it.

    13. This is the worst social media site that ever exist! Do not waste your time. You will be constantly bullied and trolled by others but when you will tell them to stop ( all I said that "I am tired of your constant comments to me and LEAVE ME ALONE") the Nexdoor will disable your account! It is almost impossible to post anything except lost/found pet and make a normal discussions. I found petition on change.org about ban of consumer fireworks ( one of almost 900 petitions about same topic) and just shared link on nextdoor for those who wish to sign it too. Trolls start commenting it with negativity and criticizing me nonstop and without any sense, because they feel boring. They called me a lier and even I showed them proof of toxicity of Chinese fireworks they still did not read it but kept trolling and even told me to leave the city then state and even country! I reported it many times but nothing change. I did not force anyone to sign the petition and I mentioned many times that it absolutely voluntary. Trolls have no any ideas but only intent to made others down and tell them that others ideas or posts or comments are bad. Even if you will report troll they still will continue to do it because they acting in a "polite" passive aggressive manner! But actually nothing is polite to say to your neighbor leave the city/state/country! I am a United States citizen and I can decide for myself where I want to live. They start calling themselves as they are patriots but not me, only because I can see the impact of chinese firewoks on our ecology and just do not want to support billion worth China business who put all world in lockdown but they never stop their own businesses. Nextdoor does not allow you to share your thoughts or ideas without be constantly bullied and trolled. I want to decide with what kind of people I want to talk. After they blocked my account for 4 days with no reason I decided just delete my account from that terrible, useless and harmful for mental health website. Deactivating and deleting completely my account from this trash site made my life better.

    14. Found it to be about the same in my region. I'm a lead and I got suspended for defending my self against self-righteous old bullies and virtue-signaling young Karens. They come and pick fights, you fight back, then they all report you. Then Nextdoor thinks we're going to buy their over-priced advertising to get these obnoxious people as customers.

    15. These poor, really emotionally "short changed" staff of ND.com are full of fear, retribution, narrow vision and unbridled judgment when it comes to basic freedom of speech they do not agree with. I am truly amazed such people are allowed to manage or monitor a social website like this! I would say 90% of them aren't "dealing with a full deck" and need to be on a psychiatrists couch for some time...SICK.

    16. The next-door neighbor is the worst piece of garbage for trolls and AI
if your opinion is different than the majority you get attacked, trolled and if you defend yourself you are banned...
That's fine. Bad me all you want...your toxic cesspool of trolls is not for me.
Mostly this in regards to the PLANDEMIC that you only allow one sided information...either get jabbed and like it or get banned for the alternate veiw point....shove your app up your ass...
Why would I want to be on any site that promotes communism and one world order thinking...

    17. Nextdoor is a biased social media site.
It’s only as good as the people who run it in each area. The admins monitoring this site run through and arbitrarily pick out who seems to violate their rules. If the admin is a leaning left, you will be singled out and kicked off the site. If the admin is part of a group (how would you know who they affiliate with?) you are speaking out against - you will be kicked off.
Time and again users can abuse the report button when they don’t like what you say. Doesn’t have to contain swear words, or statements be directed to anyone. But, if someone disagrees with your experience of a local situation they will report you to shut you up. Has happened to me and many others. There is no discussion or defense from ND police about their decisions to cut you.

It was a great way to connect to neighbors and keep up on the happenings around the area. It was a great way to vet people like handymen, gardeners etc.

ND allows discussions on politics, yet, will not monitor trolls if they side with admin views. They allow local discussions, yet, will shut down accounts from people with differing assessments of things. They allow extreme leftist trolls to ferret out user names and personal info on phone numbers and homes addresses, but careful, you state a truth they do not like or opposing thought and you're locked out.
ND is thoroughly biased because of the admins they choose to “patrol” the site. They enforce rules only when they want silence.

Sorry. I highly don’t recommend this arbitrarily regulating social site. Good idea if they had neutral admins which they do not.

    18. I'm leaving this nest of snakes. I've been looking for my leads or admins or ANYBODY for a while now. Mine seem to have political leanings that they use to decide what will be printed and what will not. They won't answer any pleas, and I can't find a way to get into touch with them.

Old school respect others is always. Not one to drop down and roll in the mud with them. Posted about the school mandate school walk out and The school Board meeting. I was called a loser a dangerous person a kook a nut job and also I was the reason so many had Covid. and to go get a vaccine!! Ok My neighbor are not friendly at all on that platform I am so done. 21. My neighborhood's Nextdoor of overrun with bullies and trolls. The leads will remove a single comment but they're never given a time out or banned. It's only useful for lost pets and getting leads on tradespeople. Otherwise it's a toxic cesspool for rage-a-holics, crazies and people who don't have a life. I only activate my account when I need to research something.

    22. Most definitely true that Nextdoor is a toxic poorly managed unprofessionally and incompetently run website. Bullies are not only allowed to run rampant they are in fact encouraged to do so by leads …how so? I have seen first hand how blatantly defamatory and vile comments and videos are posted about neighbors with many attacking the subject of the original post (remember that’s a neighbor being defamed ) without a warning or consequence and if someone tries to defend the one being vilified, nextdoor will swiftly delete said post saying it violates their rules or suspend that persons account under the guise that the defense of a neighbor is unfriendly and unneighborly . If you try to politely message a so called “lead” they ignore your message and block you . It’s censorship and bullying at its finest . Twitter and Facebook is run in a far better and professional manner .

    26. wow i’m so thankful that i’m not the only one getting brutally defaced on the app. talk about absolute TRUTH in these horror stories. Nextdoor should be sued and those getting abused should 100% be getting compensation because i’ve been attacked for months on this site from asking for help w vet bills (I WAS TOLD TO MAKE A GOFUNDME) then called a scammer and other ungodly things when i was simply just doing what the community suggested i did and i even posted sick pics of my puppy and vet bills for proof! of course taken down. then attacked and called names along w scammer asking for money when i posted about HOME REMEDIES FOR MY DOGS EARS THAT WERE INHUMANELY CUT OFF UPON BEING STOLEN. i never even said any lick about money! so crazy. then attacked again when in real life i was attacked by a grown man (never used his name because i didn’t want to be rude dummy me) and the police told me i couldn’t report it so i’m my post i asked what to do and how that was legal because hey i’m a younger female alone and brand new in this state so i didn’t understand the laws in our state we get arrested for battery but not this one i guess! anyways the post was horrible attacked me the whole time being told it was my fault a 6’3 220 lb “MAN” was biting my fingers i posted pics from the assault and was slandered to hell even told i was a scammer for using my real last name on next door bc that’s what they ask for but my middle name on facebook when it’s common for people to do that totally allowed!!! the fact that i’ve experienced the worst things said to me with then my account being banned because i “attacked them” in regards to defending myself over the multiple “grown ups” calling me names and defacing my character and publicly outing my personal information is so beyond me i just am baffled. i am so scared to post anything asking what everyone else gets to because if i do i am bashed and my post is reported!! i’ve send multiple things to the next door admins and they just tell me not to stick up for myself because im not allowed to. this last time i was banned i said “okay well did you see why i said those things???” because of course my responses that got me banned weren’t NEARLY as horrid as theirs were and they just said they would look into it or to block those people. ALSO the guy who attacked me then made a nextdoor because i guess my post was sent to him even tho i never used his name out of respect(????the guidelines even say not to publicly call people out!!) and the guy MAKES A ND ACCOUNT N MAKES A PERSONAL ATTACK TO ME WITH MY NAME says i’m lying even though i POSTED pics and TEETH MARKS FROM THE ATTACKajd defaced my character personally saying my name and the post was up for a whole day with multiple views and people saying i knew she was lying blah blah and i reported it and would check back w it still there but my stuff will get reported and deleted instantly it’s like the leads love to fuel the fire it was horrible i cannot believe this website is still allowed we should definitely make a petition to ban it because that is why people kill themselves and sadly they probably won’t do anything about any of this until someone actually gets severely hurt irl over this bullshit

I was 'temporarily suspended' 3 days (by a bot, perhaps?) for "bullying" & I did not do that!
I had politely disagreed w/a comment that judged others unfairly--was never sarcastic, profane or a 'bully'.
Deleted the ND App after I received no reply to the question I submitted in the space provided. Done w/ND!

    1. I agree! Nextdoor isn't a very active site. The readership is very thin, in other words. Besides that, many of the posts are just people venting.... people who go there and complain about others not picking up their poop, or neighbors working on their cars at night, or fireworks, it's just a never-ending bitch session. And then there's the person who will post something with political overtones (or is it undertones) such as property taxes, or education, or masks and then all the liberal versus conservative insults start flying. The only time I go to Nextdoor is when there is an animal issue, and for this it has been helpful.

    3. Agreed. I had an account and never once on years. Did I ever comment a single word..until a few months, a local known guy was actively stealing tips from all of our local shops for months. One day, a video surfaced of a brave young lady who was able to knovk the tip jar out of his hand as he ran off. He stopped to gather money as she verbally told him all about himself. I was proud of her and I simply replied. "You go girl!".

Next thing my account had sign in issues and couldn't reset pw. Etc. Next day my real awesome neighbor explained I had been kicked out.

FFD, present day, I had set up a new account, stayed quiet as usual, my car gets randomly egged like several other properties in neighborhoods, I added to comments, mine had been egged as well, date, time and location. That was it......and im kicked out again. Shame on ND for kicking out the real ones and keeping crap talking bullies complaining and most times accusing w/o knowing full stories. Your app had potential but you like drama amd your a true disservice. Thanks for nothing.

My aunts area has initials and o thought it best. His profile says “Michael Knight” like the tv show. Anyway, no notice and don’t know if it is closed for good. There really is no way to contact them. I left FB last summer because of all the hate. I see A LOT of threats and harassment, and even racist comments, and I get shut down for just wanting initials displayed. I don’t get it. And ring is just as bad. But I like knowing about lost pets and crime I my area.

  4. I quit as a Lead when I found myself spending too much time for zero pay, and not getting anywhere. Attempted to moderate and guide to the posted rules, but needed a quorum of nearby leads to be effective. Out of 40 or so nearby leads, only myself and 1 or 2 others were active at all, and the other one or two were 98% 'anything goes' types. Too much of bullies, trolls, and advertising spam, and even as a lead I couldn't tamp it down. The paid staff could have helped, but they're apparently stretched too thin and failed to remove noxious stuff up after I'd notified them, which was the last straw for me. Now, as a non-lead, I've 'muted' (will no longer see) posts from hundreds of neighbors who were spamming, bullying, trolling, so what I see is a lot more reasonable. I rarely post, and never anything that would be even mildly controversial, because I am still visible to them even though I can't see their posts or replies.

It is trivially easy to set up profiles with fake names and/or addresses. Another reason to keep away, or at least, monitor the site but rarely post and never anything that might compromise your security.

    4. So far it seems like you people were banned for being dangerous to the very existence of an advanced society. So many people of a certain age, intellect, and skin complexion find their life exists solely to threaten the very concept of progress and simply put, are no longer allowed to contribute to the discussion of how we deal with the issues of the future. Being over 50 is an automatic non-starter, you are immediately disqualified from all meaningful change when you are no longer capable of evolving socially beyond the point of complaining about gender and “the left.” You had your time, and you used your 15 minutes to literally disassemble the country you think you love- why? Because you graduated from high school in 1978, and you are developmentally delayed by comparison to modern standards. You have never set foot on a college campus, nowadays the Millennials in charge went to college while they were still in high school and now have 2 degrees. You have none, and what knowledge you accumulated is from 40 years ago and has since been proven wrong, on top of it being the same kind of information you learned in grade 12 is what we now teach to our fifth-graders. Kids in middle school receive education in physics, algebra and calculus, humanities, and creative writing- courses you never even learned AT ALL. We all want to matter, but it’s clear you people are a chimp that has been taught how to use a machine gun. For the safety of everyone else on the planet, you are not allowed to matter or you will undoubtedly kill all of us with your dumb fucking ideas that still belong in 1982. Your inability to accurately use the Internet (old people don’t realize the younger generations are taught how to effectively and safely use the Internet IN SCHOOL specifically so they DON’T fall prey to conspiracy theories, they are smart enough to realize that people exactly like you will be misled if you aren’t careful, and you aren’t even able to be careful to begin with). The problem seems to be more that you people post actually, medically insane conspiracy theories, unhinged non-factual racist viewpoints, intractable and completely uncompromising support for obviously incompetent officials merely because “durrrrr left bad, me am voter,” and otherwise embodying traits and beliefs that are patently worthless to an advanced society. This seems to be why everyone hates you, because you are clearly labeled “incompetent” right on your forehead where everyone but you can see it. Get your shit together, you probably read this thinking a “lib woke antifa” is belittling your “way of life” (being a moron is not a lifestyle choice, it means you should feel great shame 24/7 until you eventually die), when in reality I AM the new conservative establishment and you are reading the words of a functional, educated human adult that IS A MODERN CONSERVATIVE. you old Republican-era dumpster fire generation types need to get out of the way… which we understand is difficult on your welfare-funded walkers and your wheelchairs you morons can only afford thanks to the social programs you hate. We live in the real world where if you don’t compromise and do elect reality show leaders, we throw you out of the club and you are forced to live as exiled undesirables. The Internet isn’t a bunch of lefties being bullies (ironic when you consider you are forcing your simpleton uneducated religious bullshit way of life on them, innocent people just trying to do what they want and have more freedom… making you the anti-American ones by the way, whoops), the meat of it is that you people really do need to either change yourselves and be welcomed back to society, or you need to double down on your hackneyed beliefs and kill yourselves

    6. There is no way for you to know that the Sept 16th commenter’s mind has been altered by the establishment & using junk catchphrase terms like “hive mind” to attempt to diminish or homogenize the commenter’s thoughts as a “rant” - what they described is the experience of many having to deal with uneducated people destroying our planet. Your response indicates that you don’t understand (or misunderstand) the majority of what the commenter said - that is what is sad; it’s sad that many people fail to comprehend and cannot function intelligently or productively in society. Sadder is that this results not just in harming themselves, but causing harm to others.

As soon as I made a comment about one of these unneighbourly posts which was removed thanking those who helped in doing so, the which post I myself removed after only 2 minutes deciding it might not be wise, my account was suspended citing this as it's reason! I sent to the complaints department a couple of times stating this to be a bias action, but all they kept on doing was self-righteously restating what they say is there rules. I tried to point out that they are not actually going by their rules by ignoring my reporting of uncivil postings directed towards me personally and suspending my account for a post that I had removed myself. One of these postings was even calling into question the practice of my Christianity. Even this was not removed by the administrators. so yes my experience is that from administration it is biased dangerous, horrible and should not be used.I do hope this preserves others going through the soul trauma that I did.

  10. I’ve used Nextdoor's platform for several years and my name that I introduce myself and what other call me is different from my legal name. This practice is allowed as per Nextdoor's policy as long as others know me by this name (which it is). This issue was flagged, discussed and deemed an error by Nextdoor's customer service in June 2020, November 2020, and January 2021. However, several times since June 2020 my account has been deactivated due to this issue. Each time this occurred, I told to Nextdoor that I do not go by my legal name. Now apparently this is a problem, and in complete contradiction from earlier in January 2021.

Earlier this month when my account was deactivated, Mallorie from Nextdoor stated this was an issue with Nextdoors' computer algorithm. She said she noted this issue in their system, and it was remedied so that it would not happen again. Now in mid January 2021, my account was deactivated again for the fourth time.

As of this date, Nextdoor customer service reps, Mallorie and Amanda, are telling me “someone” told them I go by a different name. This is a lie! None of my friends, family members or neighbors that I know use Nextdoor. The only other name these Nextdoor reps saw (which is my legal name) is my alternative email address, which I used to sign up for Nextdoor because I don’t want Nextdoor notifications to flood my primary email inbox. I’ve asked both Amanda and Mallorie to present this proof of whomever telling them I call myself the name their forcing me to use on Nextdoor. They are not providing any proof, nor fail to answer my questions regarding who told them this.

I find this whole practice discriminatory and very troubling. How can Nextdoor tell me what name I call myself and others call me, when no one in this organization knows me? Why is a company who claims they are anti-harassment and anti-discriminatory continually harassing and discriminating me? Why is my account deactivated when I did nothing wrong? Why are Amanda and Mallorie asking me for proof of my name, when this name issue was cleared up back in June 2020? Why is my word of what I'm called and other call me now insufficient when it was sufficient in June 2020, November 2020 and January 2021?

You get false accusations sent your way by complete strangers & when you defend yourself YOU are the banned one. & then say you were uncivil & attacking & ban you for life. You cannot defend yourself on sick disturbing false accusations & lies or name call about you, without getting banned. It is truly disturbing how many times they get rid of the people who do nothing but defend themselves, banned for life, while the attackers stay. If you cannot defend yourself on a website, then it is complete control & power & sick ways about what they are doing & promoting. The leads, are just people who signed up next door in the beginning. That does not make them a lead in anyway shape or form & they should not be leads in the community as your neighbors, having biased views based on who they know.

  17. There is nothing ethical about next door site - neither the company itself or the many trolls that live there. I've talked to several people in person who complained about almost everything mentioned in this thread, myself included. After being registered on the site in silent mode for 5 yrs, I finally made a response post and then the company disabled my account. They demanded I upload my driver's license. I refused and requested they delete all my information. I doubt there's a competant employee or even an American employee who can or will do that. Those I talked to in person had removed themselves from that cesspool of contradictions, hypocrisy, hate and a complete lack of safety and privacy. Too bad even the guidelines don't reveal the whole truth of what they do in reality. Gibberish. This company knows what trouble they are doing and causing. To believe otherwise is being naive and gullible. Big tech aims to mass delete the sane and critical thinkers from online big tech forums in America. Who do you think is filling up all the alternative sites where free speech and safe, fake identities are allowed freely?

  21. The nonn-centralized administration relying on neighborhood volunteer administrators has created an environment where groups can take over administration and ex-communicate dissenters of regional issues. What we have seen in Santa Cruz County is there is a very contentious issue regarding a suburban rail project that would cost over a billion dollars and several decades to implement. The lucrative public and private contracts has created a network of pseudo-grassroot organizations to spring up for their corporate benefactors. They have taken over local chapters of community organizations and have had their leads become leads within Nextdoor. They then use this power to shutdown community voices that oppose the project and create echo chamber groups within Nextdoor to show support. It's all pretty amazing how Nextdoor condones this gaslighting and does nothing to stop it. I have since nicknamed the site "Virtual Utah"

Our district attorney sent multiple notices to Nextdoor who’s based out of San Francisco (go figure) but nothing!! My last comment on this evil site was a comment on my hurt and frustration that we were targeting the way we were. I said I’m locked and loaded and very well trained, I have zero problems doing whatever I MIGHT have too to protect my family, obviously we are 100% legal to have weapons and before any asshole thinks about doing something incredibly STUPID be sure you good with God!! Never wanted to be on this site again and getting ready to make the move the hell away!! So watch out as this site is ran by even bigger assholes then my so called community and neighbors! I’m still locked and loaded and had to get a concealed carry permit!!! Nice way to live because of some idiot cop who blackened the eyes of the other 850,000!! 27. Yeah basically a lot of the people up at our development are stabbing others in the back. I've tried warning people in our association about some of the issues that are going on such as a lot of negligence to the units it's beginning to look very sloppy and they basically keep saying that oh we've got to try and cut corners to save money. I hate saying it you have to spend the money not just kick the can down the street for the next group of people to deal with because now it becomes more and more expensive. We have a management company whose owner was desertified by Cai this is an organization similar to a rotary for property management companies so you have to maintain a certain standard and the owner was decertified for lying among other things we don't know exactly what it was and it seems that some of the people from that group study the next door site and if they catch somebody trying to spread the truth I hate saying what they do is they file a grievous complaint to next door which doesn't really investigated they just take it on their word and then basically you get banned.I was recently banned for to put it on honestly I'm not exactly sure what I think it had something to do with the property management companies trolls looking out for them and they're not supposed to be even on the site but I think some of them get on anyway. So now I'm banned permanently which I really don't give a crap about because I think it's a crap site and then I get an email from the founder of the site saying that they're thinking of going public this is a company I would not invest a penny in because I think it's a stupid organization they take everybody's word without actually doing the due diligence to check to see whether it's true or not. I recommend staying away from them I recommend staying away from Kessler farm at least until we get a new management company and preferably a new board. Freedom of speech is not tolerated very well if you get out of line you will be fined which actually is illegal if you decide to pursue it in a court of law because it's freedom of speech but it's okay for them to scream back at you but not be covered by their own rules that they have put in place. I highly recommend passing this association by until (1)The management company is replaced.(2) the board realizes what they have to do to fix the association and have the willingness to unfortunately bite the bullet and spend the money. I recommend waiting a few years and hopefully the board will be slowly but surely replaced the problem is is that I've noticed this last time pretty much everybody was just re-elected they got two new members and that's about it. So after the wonderful shouting match I got into with the property manager at this point I'm just going to take it back seat and let anybody everybody else have their say. Each homeowner has their own issues but the real problem is is that they should combine their issues together and confront the board as a group and not one at a time.

  28. It never ceases to amaze me how I can post about a simple thing like seeing a coyote or mountain lion, etc. on a walk and I get all these defenders of people on their soapbox defending the animal (as if I was planning to eradicate it), and not giving one F about my safety.

  29. Yep, it's true.

Also, there are leads/reviewers that are just as bad as any member that's a troll, bully, etc.

They'll get rid of good, well intended posts or comments and leave up a reported comment that tells someone to "shut up" or calls someone a name, either not caring about that disrespect or leaving it up bc they agree with the opinion of that rude person or they simply don't know the rules and/or have common manners/empathy.

There can be a post or comment that gets many loves, thanks, etc. that will get deleted just bc one person reported it and no one else did.

One person in my area spends all her time on there reporting posts of other people for things she does wrong and/or she does worse (Remember the school tattle tale who tells on everyone while being oblivious to or not caring about their own wrongs? Some of the leads don't take a step back and realize how much that one person is running things.

Reports are made, reviewed, and removed about minor things that don't matter, where a person just can scroll through. But, whole threads of mud slinging, disrespect, and obscenities can go on for days or even weeks, without being removed by the OP, the reviewers, or ND.

ND picks (Idk how, what "credentials") random people to review and doesn't seem to care that some of them are completely not qualified to do it and/or are rude and obnoxious themselves.

ND seems to try to be completely hands off, use reviewers free of charge, and then, even pressures reviewers to take classes to do the job. It's presented as you can assist in creating a good neighborhood and learn good things. But, overall, it's really starting to seem like: free labor, while they make the money, and you better darn well take the classes.

I've always had a problem with ads taking over the site, so I get there should be rules about advertising and I've always gotten really annoyed by the constant barrage of ads by neighbors that take over the site and you can't see the content. But, ads that are paid should be only by the neighbors and surrounding area, not big CORP. Otherwise, it's not about the well being of our neighborhood.

Also, taking over the whole thing are lost and found pets and animal rescue. Don't get me wrong, I'm all for the well being of animals and admittedly, I'm hyper triggered by animals bc of how my parents allowed for the abuse of animals. But, wow, on ND, it makes you not want to have anything to do with them ever again.

There are activists who will witch at you/pressure you to get animals and/or get mad bc you don't, then, some who witch bc you do have them, need help taking care of them, then, witch bc you had to re-home them., etc. People who keep losing theirs, people who keep finding them and pressuring people to take them, etc.

(On the other hand, there are very nice people trying to help them).

ND tells people not to get into politics on the main thread and then, posts a divisive thread related to politics that gets people blood thirsty and the war begins and so does the trolling, bullying, reporting, removing posts, etc.

    3. you go to the left margin on the Home page where it says "Directories" and below that "Neighbors", click on that and you get a list of 3 columns: Neighbors, Leads and Businesses. Click on Leads to see who are your leads and community reviewers, etc

    4. So 100% spot on. Nextdoor is apparently Run by thugs and low life’s who arbitrarily ban comments that are simply coming to the defense of a neighbor while they allow other vile insulting comments to remain. It’s eye opening and arbitrary censorship that goes against their purported neighbors first environment

  30. Well, I'm in a small town and joined without need to provide ID documents. I was enjoying it but a new neighbor on one end of town is turning the site toxic and attracting every nasty person in abutting neighborhoods in other towns to her posts. She thumbs her nose at community guidelines, and because she is in an abutting neighborhood (in the same small town) I can't flag her posts - nextdoor new rule is your flags only go to a lead if the poster is in your own neighborhood. I strongly suspect either her neighborhood doesn't have a moderator, or the moderator is her, or someone just like her

Although she is new in town, she is dense and hasn't noticed that nobody else is like her. When people request politely that she follow community guidelines, she ridicules them.

Nextdoor will do nothing about it. everyone is flagging her, in and out of her neighborhood.

what's she like? 1) I am not convinced her user name is her real name 2) she is a horrible nosy gossip 3) she rants and curses about politics 4) she has accused someone of murder in a case where police have not yet even named a suspect., in a small town where the family undoubtedly has to listen to it. If you gently hint to her about this, she trashes you.

For the first time since I started using the site, I realized that Nextdoor, if moderation is bad, can be more dangerous than Facebook, twitter or anywhere else because we are all neighbors and easily found.

I've stopped using it and may go further and delete my account.

Nextdoor is entirely focused on the value of their data at this point, so don't feel sorry for them - they could care less about you. They are busy selling their service to government - municipal/state - and their data to everyone, including gov. Look at their expanded board and advisory groups. This means it will get nastier, not nicer. Sorry, true.

It was nice while it lasted.

  31. So much misinformation here. I am a lead on nextdoor. They do NOT ask for proof of residence. As a lead, we verify that members live in the neighborhood.

You may definitely have an account at two different homes. I just helped a member resolve this issue. You only need to use two different web browsers to use them simultaneously, as you are shown as logged in and can't be "double" logged in.

Firing back at trolls and abusers on the main feed will absolutely get you in trouble. You need to report posts in order to get results. By participating in a public argument, you become a troll yourself.

We recently has a disastrous freeze in Austin, Texas. Something we've not dealt with before. Our nextdoor site kept us informed, connected those with vehicles that could transport things to those who were in need. Through nextdoor, we got potable water to those without. We brought freezing people and pets into other homes with generators to keep warm. We got formula to babies when all local businesses were shut down. Nextdoor.com is what YOU make it. Read the community guidelines, follow them and enjoy the hate free exchange with your neighbors.

Most threads turn into arguments. Simply participating in the discussion, certainly doesn’t make someone a troll

The fact that the neighborhood you’re a member on has peaceful/helpful posts, does NOT make you an expert on EVERY neighborhood!

    2. BS—the rules and guidelines are absolutely arbitrary and not applied equally. Perfectly civil comments that disagree with the current narrative are routinely deleted and the person banned. 36. The leads and the reviewers are the trolls. Just be aware. They delve into conversations when what they should be doing is simply monitoring and being neutral. They will harass you with emojis; one reviewer did that when I posted my cousin died. They protect each other, too. It's very political, but they won't use the word. Instead they will remove valid information, and call it misinformation. Especially if it has to do with the current covid/vaccination issues. If you complain to Next-door, they will take the side of the reviewers and leads, no matter what you put up and out there. Whatever you do, don't give them your real name or post a picture of yourself. Some of the people, reviewers on there behave like stalkers. Be safe. It is not a safe site at all.

    1. Exactly right. A so called reviewer posts a video of a neighbor of his allowing her little 13 pound dog to pee on one of his bushes. The Roman obviously had no bad intent and yet his videos and stories of how he doesn’t know what to do to catch this bush killing pooch invited comment after comment attacking this easily identifiable woman who probably lives on the same block as this reviewer- that she was breaking the law that the police should be called that pictures of this woman should be posted to further embarrass her. All of this was perfectly acceptable for Nextdoor. Come to the defense of the woman and you are suspended. It’s simply unbelievable any hypocrisy at its finest

Nearly all of the above is actually symptomatic of the true enormity of the problem.
The Tiny Hat Gazillionaire World Ruling Class, as fronted by Zuckerberg, Gates, Soros, etc., has brought about a "color revolution" in the U.S., a la Yugoslavia in the early 1990s, that has already splintered this country into "sides" ("red," "blue," "wymmyn," perverts, druggies, phone zombies, blacks, immigrants, etc.) all of whom are TOTALLY NUTS, have ZERO perspective, and are set to become cannon fodder and victims of another actual civil war, which of course is the whole point.
This is simply the latest variant of the same old "Divide et Imperum" chess game the Knish Knoshers have been playing on us throughout history. Since 9-11, and because of 9-11, too many have caught on to Them, so now we've outlived our usefulness and need to be "purged" a la Russian kulaks in the 1930s (anti-Semites), "Nazis" (anti-Semites), traditional Catholics and Orthodox Christians (anti-Semites), etc.
"Social Media" is most of how it was done this time, and virtually no one is clueing in to how toxic and divisive it truly is. One of the most ominous things is "cancel culture," whereby all previous meanings of American political Freedom of Speech are being swept away in favor of a chilling Stalinist climate of silencing Forbidden Ideas. Of course, our Hidden Tyrants have ALWAYS been Freedom of Speech's deadliest enemies, no matter what they've said...
Person of Interest's #1 beef with NextDoor is that it doesn't do enough "canceling." Incredible! This is how little anyone has any clue.
Politically motivated "canceling" is the #1 thing Zuckerberg et al are really about, and there's butt-loads of it going on in NextDoor, it just varies wildly in character from one locale to another due to NextDoor's half-assed structure of doing it via local volunteers it ass-rapes, essentially forcing them to reduce the site to a blatant advertising venue for local "services" grifters so they can get kick-backs-- NextDoor's real agenda, IMO. Which opens up an even deeper problem destroying America: Corruption. It's EVERYWHERE, and EVERYONE is totally caught up and invested in it. They can't remember or imagine a time when it was any other way. They don't even understand it as Corruption. They think it's just "being smart, duh," which is how all criminals always think. They've been subconsciously criminalized by dialectical designs of "media" they were too shallow to notice.
"I LIKE my shows. They're FUN. Fuck you, you're a drag!"
Advertising revenue is only the most obvious reason media is "free of charge..." Then there's Orwellian Social Engineering. Orwell didn't write about "communism." He portrayed Them.
Corruption is an Apocalypse of Character, the absolute worst disaster that can befall a society, worse than unlimited nuclear war. A society can totally rebuild from THAT in a couple generations. Look at Japan. But let your society become a sewer of quasi-human rats eating their own young, and that is a one-way ticket to HELL from which you will NEVER come back. The climb back out is too hard, and you don't have the will. Entropy. It's only reversed by all of you actually exterminating yourselves, clearing the way for others, never parties to it, to move in and rebuild on your graves.
I have no idea why any of you want to go there. As I said, you've lost all perspective. You keep trusting and swilling "media" too much, even as it sucks your Humanity away.
It was only after I began carrying on in this vein that NextDoor instantly "canceled" me for using a fake name, which had been totally obvious from the beginning.
    Like I said: Forbidden Ideas.

  38. I originally started using NextDoor after I found a dog and wanted to post to as many forums to try and find the owner. Thankfully it worked and she was reunited with her owner. I have noticed that some people seem to get away with bullying others relentlessly while others seem to be in trouble if they try to defend themselves. Political, covid and vaccine talk elicit verbal battles and I have noticed the left is always favored even if what they said was proven to be untrue it still stays up. I went to log in the other day to respond to a message sent to me about pet sitting that I hadn't had time to respond to earlier. Imagine my surprise when I find out I'm suspended for 4 days with no explanation as to what I'm suspended for, just some generic community guidelines about maybe politic, covid or vaccines. Seems to me if you are going to suspend someone's account you should show them the post or comment in question. I think it's BS. Someone mentioned to me that because I have a pet sitting business and it's near the holidays other another sitter may have done this to stop their competition. I don't know if it's possible or true but I am unimpressed and considering just deleting my account

  44. From a veteran ND’er: I was an ND Lead for many years, having brought my neighborhood into ND back in 2012 or something. I was also a frequent reader and poster to the National Leads Forum (NLF) which is a Leads-only chat board where Leads help each other and chat with ND representatives.

Sadly, ND *could be* so much more than what it is. Its hyper-local nature scratches an itch that FB and other social media cannot. That is, connecting to people you might not already know who are geographically relevant. There is good utility there. But unfortunately, ND has succumbed to the same fate of many other social networks. Namely, tolerating unhelpful posts such as spam, hate, racism, disinformation, heated arguments, name-calling, and all the other crap that makes FB, Twitter, other social networks, and yes ND such cesspools -- all in service of increasing engagement to pump up the IPO, stock value post-IPO, or eyeball count for advertisers.

Ostensibly, Leads are supposed to moderate their neighborhoods to keep things civil. But ND leads have very little power to moderate. They can delete posts only that originate in their “home” neighborhood (NH), not those from nearby neighborhoods (NNs). They cannot place anyone in timeout. So a problem poster can just continue posting, Leads can do nothing but report to ND. Very rarely, a problem poster might be temp-banned (usually a week or so) by ND but will invariably be allowed back on only to violate again. Permabans are exceedingly rare.

Another problem, only about 5 to 10 percent of Leads are at-all active, leaving the vast majority of neighborhoods unmoderated – the wild west. Leads can remove violating posts from these unmoderated NNs but it takes at least four Leads voting to do so. And if any other Lead votes DNR (Do Not Remove) that detracts from the four voting to remove. Which means even more Leads have to vote. It’s a mess.

Leads receive no training to speak of. Some Leads weren’t even asked to be Leads – they were summarily promoted to Lead status for reasons known only to ND corporate or to NDs Lead-promoting autobot

I’ve carped to no end on the NLF and submitted multiple ideas that could fix a lot of these problems. I’ve I’m gonna complain about something, I’ll back it up with corrective suggestions. But ND has shown no interest in implementing any of them. Indeed, anything that could reduce engagement or eyeballs is an automatic non-starter for ND.

Once I stubbornly realized this then I knew ND would continue to devolve into the toxic dump that it’s become. It’s true that different neighborhoods have different experiences. It depends on how civil the surrounding neighborhoods are. But as with life, I’ve found that the more people participate in something, the more likely the suck factor will increase to untenable levels thus driving me away.

This is why I no longer engage in social media.

Well that got me booted off after over 120 neighbors read the post and over 96 likes in just 72 hours. 46. I've been blocked and warned several times when I'm being very polite while opponents are allowed to call me stupid, ignorant, disrespectful etc. The latest two incidents are as follows: a vaccine advocate said covid is spread by unvaccinated "assholes". The comment was not removed. I replied that calling people assholes isn't a good way to change their minds, for which I was blocked and my post removed. The second one was when someone was abused for using the word "coloured". I commented that it's strange the NAACP still use the word in their name (because they represent not only black people but other ethnicities) if it's considered offensive. I was subject to an entire thread of awful abuse that implied I was condoning the word when I was doing the opposite. Finally a couple of non white folk pitched in and said what they were doing was bullying. Complaining does no good because the people in charge always take the side of those espousing leftist woke views even when they are being demonstrably vile.

Their reasoning - the private message I sent the weirdo back telling him what I thought of him and to stop.
Do they not get that being a woman and being harassed, in any way, by a male is disconcerting.
Their behavior has been like "big brother" before but this is beyond comprehension. Are they truly this out of touch or do they still believe women need to "make nice" to weirdo men.

Too many trolls and people who feed the trolls.

  59. I'm relieved, and a bit sad, to realize it not just my region. I don't know about bullies and trolls, I rarely browse or post, but when I do it is full of trivial complaints such as they bought 15 bags of candy for Halloween and had only 4 kids, which prompted a thread of how many several others had show up, or complaints about long line at grocery store or Walmart etc. I mean really, is this necessary?
I don't interact, but occasionally post a response then disengage, such as offering the suggestion that I find ordering groceries etc online from the local stores and just pickup for free. I suggest it is very helpful for those short on time and impatient with the ordinary inevitable little annoyances.
Even lost or found pet posts are filled with human bashing and anthropomorphizing animals. Not every stray dog that tests positive for heartworm was abused and dumbed by an evil owner because they didn't want to pay for care.
People create narratives out or pure speculation and imagination, possibly based on past experience and take it to be true. And so many "adults" are about emotionally regulated as toddlers.
I'm fairly solitary, and whenever I think of finding a bigger social group, browsing ND and FB make me grateful for the freedom from that kind of toxicity.
I wonder if this considered "normal" behavior by society, or is it just the more pathological ones that feel the need to vent, gossip and complain? Who knows.
I recommend browse with caution, carefully consider before engaging. Instead of a meet and greet maybe more of a place to spot red flags, Lol.
Fortunately I haven't seen any of my adjacent neighbors on there. I prefer Not to know that side of people, prefer organic casual day to day interaction. Good luck all🙏🏻

Since my husband is a reviewer, I got to see the “leads” and “reviewers” make their snide and rude comments on reported content. This consisted of, “I don’t know why she feels her information is so important” to “who’s the Karen here.” These are coming from “Leads” and “Reviewers” who are above the ND guidelines. One lady on the same post I was banned on replies to me, “I guess you don’t know how to read.” Which stayed up and not reported. The site is a joke. They play by arrogant and mob mentality rules. She's out to get people and has a posse of other leftists making sure the site stays leftist in this city. They released a new privacy policy. I don't agree with them, so left. not worth my time. If anyone has any info, I'd very much appreciate it if you'd post here.

    3. I wouldn't be here if I weren't a little aggravated. I totally agree that ND has silenced My first amendment rights. Not allowed to talk about politics or covid even in past tense. And you can't even contact them as for the reasons they flagged you. I like my neighbors. Crime is out of control these days. If the thieves want something they just take it. ND helps with getting the word out. It's still social media politically controlled. It steams me . But I 'll get over it. 🙏Ing for change.
      Thank you

  67. Nextdoor need be dissected & analyzed. Clearly fake profiles who cause the most trouble & clues they are "employees". It's a leftist Nazi attempt to control. Same as that fake group "crimemapping" attaching itself to law Enforcement. More leftist propaganda groups needing transparency. Crimemapping takes the money & provides pitiful results.

  68. Nexdoor is nothing but a bunch of GARBAGE. People complaining about things totally not worth complaining about. For some reason someone who doesn't even live in my neighborhood accused me of making a racist comment. Which was not true at all. I think I totally surprised the person when I replied to them and told them I was born in North Africa and if he bothered me again I was going to report him. About a week later I thought I would check out nextdoor and when I tried to log in I couldn't. There was a notification saying that I was suspended for a week for not following community guidelines. They suspend innocent people and leave the trouble makers alone. A totally useless app.

  69. I’m account was disabled apparently for using the same name that is my email name. When I tried to contact NextDoor to give my correct information and request that my account be reactivated, my request has gone unanswered. I normally don’t give out my legal name on public forum websites like this, especially if they like to advertise your location. You never know who might be lurking, hoping to grab that information. We live in an unsafe world and should have the right to protect ourselves. These websites and apps that force us to advertise our real information should be given a monetary fine for each offense and forced to make financial restitution to every user who signs up.

  70. I thought that Nextdoor was a free speech, non-politically motivated website. Unfortunately, I just found out how VERY WRONG I AM! Nextdoor is not a social media platform standing up against censorship. IN FACT, IT IS PROMOTING CENSORSHIP AND VIOLATING AMERICANS' RIGHTS TO FREE SPEECH.

    1. Nextdoor was NEVER a free speech website though? I don't know where you got that idea, because it's never been the case.
Any website privately owned and operated will not be a free speech website. You will always have to play by the rules (i.e. Terms of Service) when you use them.
The only way you will have true freedom of speech online is to make your own website.

    2. Very few social media site actually support free speech. The majority of them are nothing more than leftist echo chambers

  71. I've seen trolls weaponize moderators on NextDoor. Combating disinformation, I watched their hate intensify. Suddenly, it was obvious the trolls were combing through all my old posts, trying to locate reportable material. Having a scratched hand in a photo taken hiking was declared "Harmful Activity," and showing a map with a pin on a troll's street to reference another location was a "violation of privacy."

Corrupt moderation seems to be the 800 lb gorilla in NextDoor's room. While their CEO and executive team gush about NextDoor being a safe haven of diversity and inclusion, I find it more like participating in a Proud Boys weekend retreat.

  72. Today, March 3rd, there are still folks on ND that are supposed to be suspended for harassing folks, sending selected, copied, clipped, posts via snail mail, bullying the Mods to where they do not report any longer, intimidating anyone who asks them to please refrain from said posts, gets suspended for a day, a few days, a week, a month, then comes back on and starts up again with the same old, same old. Also has created new accounts in other areas of town under a different name two times, been reported and yet is back on again. Is unable to get their tenses right in their posts when impersonating another person. It is very frustrating. When a vote occurs, some who feed into her stories and do not know the entire picture vite to keep vs. voting the rules or Guidelines. Then you have the dog owners who so slyly believe they are being sneaky sharing a pic of their mixed breed mutt with a full belly about to deliver more mutts. Then sharing again once they are born. They were told wee puppies are worth $1500+ because the last part of their breed name is oodle, sky, etc. They are actually mutts the unknowing is rooked into paying too much with all kinds of genetic disorders like hip or elbow dsyplasia, thyroid cancer, progressive retinal atrophy, aortic stenosis & more. Yet, the main thing, Animal sales are NOT allowed on ND. Time to vote... oh, but the puppies in the picture are just so cute, so the vote is half to keep and half to remove. No one is following the guildelines. These and so many other violations happen everyday across the USA on the ND app and not a thing is done.

  73. Nextdoor is great for one thing...it lets us know just how ignorant and depraved our neighbors are. I have been a reviewer on Nextdoor, and it is hard to believe just how petty grown-ups can be.

  74. As a former moderator Nextdoor is a complete joke. The leads gang up and will not follow guidelines. They will screen shoot and share with their friends. It’s high school drama in my neighborhood. If you go higher up they do absolutely nothing. Complete joke!!! Neighbors bully one another, shame each other and no one does anything unless you are unliked. Bias at its best.

  75. And just how intolerant of different opinions they can be.

  76. I agree with most of the people here that ND is full of public shaming with a mob mentality based on one person's false assumptions. A friend I went to college with, lived in the most diverse city in the world (or so we thought- San Diego) Her neighbor decided my friend was "crazy and ill" and it spread like wildfire. She couldn't even leave her house to go to her car without someone taking video of her, or snapping a photo. She's lived with lupus since her teenage years, so her face swells up, also leaving scars from blisters from sun sensitivity, and she is a mixed race. Everyone would publicly scream at her on the street.. "Why is your face so big and a strange color!" She is light brown, being Japanese, American Indian and Spanish. Well, that person that lived next door, got to move, and she was left with the residue of her rumors. She said she cried a lot, but her mom died, so who wouldn't cry? Her neighbor called her a "hag" and other discriminatory words, therefore, having the neighborhood make sounds when she would walk down the street to get a coffee; everyone chimed in to make sure she wasn't welcome. She felt it was ok, making another assumption that she was uneducated and inarticulate, which is of the contrary. She's a writer, and has a very popular blog, pertaining to living with #lupus. My step mom is a lawyer, and she said this is blatant slander and defamation. Just because you hear a few words coming from someone's window, you don't get to fill in the blanks and make up stories. I will never understood people with so much, will harass and slander someone that has so little. It's beyond my comprehension. We must learn people's story before spreading lies.

  77. I can attest to the toxicity of Nextdoor and their refusal to take action to defend the person harmed. I recently commented on a post from a man whose 19 year-old adult daughter had suffered a life threatening asthma attack landing her in the hospital. It wasn't her first attack and her portion of the hospital bills for this were very high because she was on her father's insurance and did not have adequate coverage. Her dad set up a gofundme account with a link in his post. I simply commented, as did a few others, that I didn't understand why she wouldn't have her own insurance, which she could get for basically nothing if she's low income, avoiding the need to beg for help. This man proceeded to go on a tirade against me, accusing me of having his post removed (it wasn't), and digging up everything I've ever said o. NEXTDOOR and twisting my words, telling readers I want to shoot people and blow people up. And he also made several scurrilous comments about my character in an effort to discredit and shame me. I've reported it to Nextdoor but they've taken no action thus far. That's the last straw for me with Nextdoor.

  78. Most of this is all too true, unfortunately. I see people walk like zombies, afraid to get a picture of them, keeping their heads down, not looking at anyone... thinking "What are they going to say about me?" No one is outside anymore; everyone is a suspect. I read on another post that a woman didn't even want her kids playing outside, because they would complain they are giggling and laughing too much. If you were born white, you're ok. If your any other color, good luck. They think you're casing their homes, or a good for nothing. The mob mentality and getting on bandwagons is alive and well. They love to harass and gang up. This app has destroyed lives, I knew a woman that wanted to take her life. Horrible and petty humans we have in this world. And they all think it's so funny, and chalk it up as "Tht person is just a low life." Disgusting.

  79. I've deleted my Nextdoor. Yes--whiney RICH women that complain to the police that their son was pulled over for speeding 100MPH in a 35 (yes--this IS true)...or anyone that will ask a question on a hair salon, or store, or the price of gas..will be flamed a Karen, or "you must have voted for Trump!" and others will join in. (these same people wonder why children bully--becuase their parents do!).

  80. I read in the article about how you can be bullied and then when you defend yourself, the person that is defending themselves are the ones that get banned. This is exactly what happened to me !
I have a handyman business and I get most of my work from nextdoor. Now that I am banned indefinitely, it has really taken a toll on me. I have not been able to find work and I am close to foreclosure on my home. This has put me in a severely depressed state. So much so that I am contemplating suicide.
I have tried to communicate with them begging to give me another chance. The support for this app is virtually non-existent. I am generally a very happy person with no depression whatsoever. But them disabling my account is putting me in a very bad mental state.I honestly do not see another option other than killing myself. I have been posting in many FB groups looking for work and am getting no responses at all. So, it all seems pretty hopeless and I do not see any other option other than taking that last final act of my life.

  81. I was a lead in my previous neighborhood. The site was a mess when I took it over. The only time headquarters really did anything was when three families (evidently were all friends or related) threatened to KILL me, and they were not kidding based on all of their posts. Yep right on next door said they were going to kill me. Why? Because I was making them go by the rules. Another time a woman told me on the next door site she had a gun and was coming to shoot me. Of course the sheriff got involved. All people involved were supposedly banned for life.

Eventually next door had enough of me because I am a rule person. - and it depends who gets the reports as to whether they were an infraction. I noticed based on demographics some reports were marked against me because they said they were not in violation (especially in states where police are defunded), and after a while I had too many marks so it was best to leave. Once I left the site went down hill. The new lead just posted religious stuff daily, and was shoving her religion down everyone's throats. I said - do you miss me yet?

  82. I was a ND lead for a number of years in a previous neighborhood in Palm Beach County, Florida.

The single biggest reason why so much hate and other posting violations exist on ND is because the area Leads do not have *real* moderating capability, like they would on FB Groups or Sub-Reddits.

Leads cannot unilaterally remove a post except for within their own neighborhood. For NNs (Nearby Neighborhoods), it requires an affirmative remove vote from multiple Leads. Problem is, most Leads (90+% easily) are MIA.

Leads cannot ban members nor can they put them in read-only mode even temporarily. So problem members can simply re-offend.

Leads have very little moderating power. That's why good Leads leave.

The inmates are left running the asylum.

  83. I was on Nextdoor about three years. I’m no longer there because I was banned. I’ll give info on my ban, then one on another person. You’ll see the BIG difference.

A member had posted a situation where his cat was killed by two neighbor’s dogs. BUT, they had attached his cat five or six times prior.

I didn’t reply to the OP, but another member. I said people that allow their cats outdoors know the risks/dangers and when they knowingly do so, they assumed the risk.

Not long after I posted my comment, the OP sent me a DM. In it he said, “I always knew you were a grade a “C” word.” For emphasis, he spelled the “C” word out. I reported him and he was given a 3 month suspension. Oh by the way, he was a Lead for Nextdoor! 3 months for him and a year for me.

  84. I hated ND so bad for their censorship that I literally went on a rampage wanting to be executed. It took one week. I've learned that people no longer have a voice in their community so I'm starting a local newspaper (yes, literally) with a circulation of 70,000 mailed to every mailbox via USPS. In my first edition I will have an illustration of a coyote laughing at a human with NextDoor tape over the humans mouth. If I can't speak freely about my local or national officials, I want no part of the orchestra.

  85. I cannot, for safety reasons, use my real name but still wanted to participate in community information and topics. I have left an abusive situation and their are people within blocks of me that prohibit me from using my real name for the safety of my children and I. Because I cannot verify my name, my account has been deactivated. This app is ridiculous if it forces you to put your safety at risk to have a voice in your community. I would move but I’m court ordered to live here by my divorce orders. I’m done with the stupid trolls and seeing how mean my neighbors are behind a keyboard anyway. It made me not want to leave my home.
